One day a poor young man who was selling goods from door to door, in order to pay his school fees, realized that he only had a ten cent coin left in his pocket and he was hungry. He decided that he would ask for a meal at the next house. Nevertheless, his nerves got the better of him when a charming young lady opened the door. Instead of a meal he only asked for a glass of water.

She thought that the young man seemed hungry, so instead she brought him a big glass of milk. He drank it slowly and then he asked her “How much do I owe to you?” “You don’t owe me anything” she replied. “My mother always taught us never to accept payment for charity.” “Then, I am grateful to you with all my heart.” The young man answered. When Howard Kelly left the house, not only did he feel physically stronger, but also his faith in God and in men was stronger. He had been ready to give up and to leave everything.

Some years later, that young lady fell seriously ill. The local doctors were confused and finally they sent her to the big city, where they called specialists to study her rare illness. They called Dr. Howard Kelly for a consult. When he heard the name of the town where she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. He immediately went up from the foyer of the hospital to her room. Wearing his doctor’s robe he entered to see her and recognized her immediately.

He returned to the observation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he paid extra attention to the case. After a long struggle, he won the battle. Dr. Kelly asked the administration office of the hospital to send him the entire invoice of her expenses to approve them. He checked them and then he wrote something on the border of the invoice and sent them to the patient’s room.

She was afraid to open it because she knew that it would take the rest of her life to pay off all the expenses. Finally she opened it and something caught her attention on the border of the invoice. Se read these words….. “Paid in full many years ago with a glass of milk – (signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.” Tears of joy flooded her eyes and her happy heart prayed like this:

“Thank you, God for Your love has manifested in the hands and hearts of men.”

I say “Thank you because a remnant still remain that for love to You and to Your Name, they do good without looking at who and You then give your reward.”

As Your Word says, “If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in giving–large or small–it will be used to measure what is given back to you.”
